What is the Difference Between Psychotherapy and Coaching?

Psychotherapy is an evidence based treatment for many psychological disorders.  When you enter psychotherapy, you are entering a doctor-patient relationship that will treat your distress.  You will collaborate with your doctor on a treatment plan and you will work on treatment goals to assist in improving the quality of your life.  Therapy is conducted very often in a quiet office setting during a mutually agreed upon regular appointment time.

Coaching is a service that may be offered by many mental health practitioners.  However, when you hire a coach, you are entering an equal partnership that does not assume a doctor-patient relationship.  You will work with your coach to develop future oriented goals and your coach will help keep you accountable. Coaching is more flexible and allows for a relationship that feels more like a mentor-mentee relationship.  It also allows for more flexibility in location and style of meeting.

If you are suffering from extreme stress, anxiety, depression or other symptoms that may be a diagnosable concern, Dr. Rhodes is available to treat your symptoms.  Dr. Rhodes also provides couples therapy in addition to individual therapy.
