What is Forensic Psychology?

Forensic Psychology is a specialized field of psychology that combines issues relevant to psychology and the law in order to help the court or attorneys answer questions relevant to the legal system. Dr. Rhodes specifically works in the area of family law.  In this role, a psychologist is retained to evaluate, consult, or provide expert testimony on cases that are involved in the family, juvenile or dependency court system.

How Did Dr. Rhodes become Involved in this type of work?

Dr. Rhodes was trained at Tulane University by a team of researchers who specialized in the assessment of parent-child relationships.  She worked on an innovative court team project associated with the Jefferson Parish dependency court called The Tulane Infant Team.  As part of her training she was involved in the assessment, treatment, consultation, and expert witness testimony of cases that involved young children entering the foster care system.  Through this innovative program, judges were able to work with mental health providers to make real differences in the lives of families.  Inspired by her training, Dr. Rhodes sought advanced training in the family court system and in the evaluation of custody issues, specifically.

During her time in California, Dr. Rhodes worked as a forensic consultant under the supervision of Dr. Robert Geffner.  In this role, Dr. Rhodes received training in consultation with attorneys regarding the more complex matters of abuse & violence in the realm of child custody evaluations.  She has been on the editorial board of the Journal of Child Custody and continues to be involved in consultation cases in both New York and California.

What Types of Cases does Dr. Rhodes see?
